The city's incoming mayor, Zohran Mamdani, has confirmed to take up residence in the traditional Gracie Mansion, vacating the rent-stabilised apartment that sparked debate throughout his run for office.

A Traditional Abode

Built in 1799, Gracie Mansion has been the mayoral home for most New York City mayors after the World War II era.

But, Mamdani, for whom rent control is a central platform, hesitated to declare he would live there promptly after his triumph in November.

"The choice rested on the security of my family and the importance of dedicating my full attention on implementing the platform on affordability New Yorkers elected me on," stated Mamdani in his announcement.

Leaving Astoria

Mamdani lived in the Astoria neighbourhood, an area known for its abundance of immigrant communities and culinary diversity.

"To the people of Astoria: my gratitude for exemplifying the true spirit of New York City," Mamdani's statement said.

"Although my address will change there, the community will continue to reside inside me and my efforts as mayor," he said.

Political Debate

Throughout his race for mayor, Mamdani linked his key pledge – halting rent increases – to his personal living arrangements.

Yet his critics, most notably one-time governor Andrew Cuomo, attacked Mamdani for remaining in the rent-stabilized unit although he hails from a well-known family.

Previous Exceptions

Some mayors have opted to reside at Gracie Mansion.

Michael Bloomberg, the former mayor, chose to live in his own townhouse on the Upper East Side during his three terms, which wrapped up in 2012.

Instead, Bloomberg said he believed it ought to be a space for official events, and pushed for an extensive renovation of the older mansion.

A Stately Residence

Upon taking up residence at Gracie Mansion near his inauguration on 1 January, he will find himself in an environment far removed from his modest Astoria digs.

Featuring pale yellow exterior, forest green window covers, and white railings, Gracie Mansion is a picturesque home overlooking the East River.

Inside, the lower floor of the classically designed mansion is furnished to reflect the home's early 19th-century origins.

The property, which is said to has several bedrooms, also has enhanced security to safeguard the mayor and his family.

Ghostly Tales

Some residents have suggested that Gracie Mansion also has ghostly inhabitants.

Chirlane McCray, the partner of ex-mayor Bill De Blasio, once said that doors would sometimes open and shutting on their own, and the floorboards creaked eerily.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams was even more convinced. "It doesn't matter what people claim," he stated in 2022. "There are ghosts in there, man."

A Critical Policy Issue

His former home is rent stabilised, a policy where the city imposes caps on how much building managers can increase rent each year.

New Yorkers view rent-stabilized housing as crucial resources as the price of rent rises faster than what many can afford.

It was reported Mamdani was paying approximately $2,300 each month for his apartment.

According to the property website Zillow, the typical monthly cost for a one-bedroom apartment in New York City is $3,500 a month.
