Those Brothers from Dagestan Making Their Mark in Mixed Martial Arts and at Manchester United.

Ibragim Ibragimov grins as he thinks about how his family's life has transformed since moving to England from Dagestan eight years ago.

"I love it here," the PFL star states.

"My father and I often remark, 'this is the nation I should have been born in.'"

The young man left his home in the North Caucasus of Russia as his father believed a relocation covering more than 3,000 miles promised superior career prospects for him and his siblings.

The original idea was for Ibragim and his three brothers – Amir (17), Gazik (16), and Muhammad (15) – to finish school before enrolling in one of the nation's colleges.

But, life now looks quite different for the Ibragimov family.

Ibragim is now a professional MMA fighter and is seen as one of the prime prospects in the PFL, a major MMA organization.

His siblings have chosen a different route in athletics and have each been signed by Manchester United – with Amir vying for a place in the senior squad.

"Our key goal for us is to squeeze everything from our chosen fields," says Ibragim.

"I want them to represent all of the best teams in the world. Now it is Man United, tomorrow it might be a different team."

From Wrestlers to Football Prodigies

Situated in the south of Russia, Dagestan has a mythical status among combat sports enthusiasts for generating a slew of UFC titleholders in recent years.

The region has a rich history in wrestling, thriving in the sambo style and creating a host of Olympic and world winners.

This success is no accident, though, as children from the region are often pushed to take up combat sports, specifically wrestling, practically as soon as they can walk.

"As a young, my dad was always telling me and my younger brothers that we had to be powerful, first to protect ourselves, your family, and your friends," says Ibragim.

"So we all got used to combat, and that's why everyone knows how to fight in Dagestan. It's not a surprise."

"Amir was a very good wrestler. You can see the move from wrestling to football; clearly, it assisted my little brothers a lot."

"Many of the footballers he faces don't have the identical foundation he has. That's why he's stocky, powerful and really driven – due to wrestling."

Amir was just nine years old when he was put through his paces at Sheffield United. Unaware of his actual age, trainers grouped him with boys five years older.

He was unfazed by the oversight and was more than comfortable holding his own against older players because of his experience in wrestling.

"They believed Amir and I were the identical age, apparently," says Ibragim.

Amir was signed, along with Ibragim's younger brothers Gazik and Muhammad.

The clan's time in South Yorkshire was brief, however, as only weeks after joining the Blades, Manchester United learned of Amir's ability and he transferred over the Pennines consequently.

"They faced Manchester United in a competition and Amir scored a brilliant free-kick," says Ibragim.

"One of their talent spotters saw him play and selected him straight away."

Six years after signing for the Old Trafford club and at the age of 15, Amir was one of the most youthful players in the club's records to practice with the senior side when he achieved this in April 2023.

"Know what he told me? 'This is where I should be'," Ibragim says.

"Is he able to be a first-team player for Manchester United? 100%. They need to let all the young players get game time right now."

"I don't think they would play worse than the current starters. I believe the youngsters are more motivated than the present first-team players."

Following that, Gazik and Muhammad, the latter once part of the academy of Manchester City, have likewise transferred to Manchester United.

"Gazik, this youngster is gifted," continues Ibragim.

"He picked up every skill quicker than the others. He's a solid defender. He's going to be like a modern Rio Ferdinand for Man United."

'A Goal' to Fight at Old Trafford

Ibragim has now relocated to Manchester and spends most of his days perfecting his MMA abilities at a local gym.

In August, he spent three weeks in his homeland at Khabib Nurmagomedov's gym, assisting Islam Makhachev prepare for a November UFC title fight.

"I would never have thought I would be training under Khabib," Ibragim says.

"He was the best fighter in the world – and we constantly used to look up to him when we were growing up."

"Now, I'm here in his gym and training with Islam Makhachev."

Recently working with two UFC titleholders from Dagestan, it is unsurprising Ibragim states he is eager to claim a world title of his own someday.

However that does not prevent him from occasionally dreaming of playing for United and walking out on the hallowed turf at Old Trafford, much like his brothers.

"I had a PlayStation at home and I always used to play as Man United, scoring with Cristiano Ronaldo, Wayne Rooney and Carlos Tevez," he says.

"Today, for my brothers to be Man United players, it's similar to a dream come true."

"An event at Old Trafford? It's a ambition for me. I was speaking to the PFL guys about it to see if they would do it. It would be enormous."
