The Reason Real Madrid Have 'Complete Faith' in Teenager Thiago Pitarch
When an teenage creates club a historic moment in a key Champions League match against City, it inevitably draws acclaim and the spotlight.
During his first start in the competition - and fifth appearance for the team - Thiago Pitarch made a strong impression as the fifteen-time European champions claimed a three-nil last-16 first leg advantage at the Santiago Bernabeu.
The teenager, who also had his club debut in the qualifying round a few weeks prior with a cameo off the bench at Benfica, then assisted Los Blancos defeat the English Premier League side in Tuesday's return to confirm a last eight berth.
Aged 18 years old, Pitarch became the club's youngest player to begin two matches in the Champions League knockout stages, beating Brazil forward Vini Jr's previous mark by a week and a half.
Rapid Ascent From The Academy
This talent is the most recent to come through from the famed youth system and is quickly establishing himself as one of Alvaro Arbeloa's most exciting young players.
He signed for Real from CD Leganes in the summer of 2023, having previously been with Atletico and Getafe's academies, and initially featuring for the Juvenil C team, where he quickly made a positive impact.
Pitarch worked his way up to the B team and it was during a pre-season game in which they faced the senior squad, then managed by Arbeloa, where the youngster is said to have caught the attention of the present manager, who replaced Xabi Alonso in the new year.
Spanish media would later label the moment as "an instant connection," adding he excelled not only for his technical ability, but for the energy, character and drive he brought to the team.
'His Best Attribute Is His Character'
During the pre-season of 2025, ex-manager Xabi Alonso called up Pitarch to practice with the first team and awarded him minutes during the warm-up matches.
However, it was Arbeloa's appointment that became the turning point in his development as he was introduced as a late substitute in both ties against the Portuguese side that led to the clash with Pep Guardiola's team.
"I've dreamed of this each night when sleeping, the very first time I started playing the game, every day you head to training and every day you have a game," said the player after his first appearance.
"I've just achieved my dream with the greatest club in the world and in the best competition."
Given a first start in La Liga against Getafe - where he spent four years after moving from Atleti in 2018 - he has retained his place for the next four as fitness issues to Bellingham and Ceballos created an opening.
The teenager has seized it with performances that have belied his age and experience.
"He is a extremely fast footballer, and you can see his capabilities," said the coach. "He's incredibly energetic, with excellent endurance, work-rate and mobility."
The player's mindset has also stood out to his manager.
"His standout trait is his personality," continued Arbeloa. "He constantly demands the possession, and even under pressure, he remains unfazed.
"I realize fans might be surprised to watch him start in a Champions League match, but he's playing because I had complete confidence in him to perform what he usually does.
"He will keep receiving chances with the main squad. It is delightful to have a talent like him."
Spain or Morocco?
Pitarch was born in Fuenlabrada, in the Spanish capital's community, and was raised fully immersed in the local game, progressing through youth setups before entering Real Madrid's renowned youth academy.
He possesses both Moroccan and Spanish nationality, giving him the option to represent both nations at senior international level.
Under Fifa eligibility rules, players may appear for different countries at youth level without being locked in, with the ultimate choice only final once they play in a competitive full international.
He has played for Spain at underage levels, turning out for both the under-19 and U20 teams, and took part in the 2025 Youth World Cup, where Spain made it to the last eight.
Nevertheless, he has not yet decided to either senior national team, who are monitoring his progress with interest.
Speaking recently, Pitarch confirmed: "I have not taken my ultimate choice so far. My situation is positive with Spain, but I'll make a conclusion in the near future."
His situation echoes that of other bi-national talents such as Real team-mate Brahim Diaz and Barcelona forward Yamal. While 18-year-old Yamal chose Spain, Diaz decided to play for the Atlas Lions.
Eyes on the Prize
At present, Pitarch's focus is on making his mark in the Madrid lineup and repaying his manager's belief.
He played over an hour in the two-one win at City, which sealed a five-one aggregate success and a last-eight tie with Bayern Munich.
He was replaced by fellow youth graduate in Angel to emphasise Arbeloa's trust in the next generation to aid the club pursue future success.
After his notable contributions so far on European football's biggest stage, the midfielder is tipped to be a central figure in that.
"Arbeloa treats me the same. We deal with it very normally. I attempt not to think about it too much - I must deserve my minutes on the pitch," he said following the win at Manchester.
