The Lions of Teranga's Emerging Talent Camara: From Dreams to Afcon Favourites.
When I enter the room, Lamine Camara grabs a soccer ball he won’t let go of until after our chat. It’s a simple visual metaphor for a ambition he has always held onto. “I only wanted football; I was focused solely on that,” states this Monaco and Senegal midfielder.
His resolve and natural ability won over clubs like Metz, Monaco, and Génération Foot. However, the most difficult person to convince was not a club executive or coach, it was from his dad. “He didn’t want me playing soccer but it’s because he hadn’t seen me play,” explains Camara.
Surmounting Early Hurdles
Eventually, on “one beautiful day,” Camara earned his dad's approval to chase his career in the game. A further barrier was his modest frame, which deterred his hometown team Casa Sports from offering him a deal.
However, Génération Foot – the club that nurtured talents including Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé and Ismaïla Sarr – were convinced immediately. After Camara was named the best player in a regional tournament, the scouts were “astonished” to discover he was without a contract. They acted quickly. “I was taken straight to the training centre. They prevented me from returning to Casamance,” he recalled.
An Unforgettable Season and Continental Arrival
That decision put him on a pathway to Europe. His breakthrough came in 2023, “a year to remember,” starting with Camara winning the CHAN trophy. Shortly after, despite fatigue, he competed in the U-20 Africa Cup, leading his country to the title and being named player of the tournament.
Soon after, he was unveiled as Metz, emulating Mané. “Settling in wasn't a challenge,” states the youngster. He has lived alone in Europe, a situation his relatives support to maintain his concentration.
Influences and On-Field Identity
Off-field noise aren't a concern for Camara, who draws inspiration from Kevin De Bruyne’s “modesty” and superb playing qualities. He is also a big admirer of midfielders such as Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his international teammate Idrissa Gana Gueye.
His ball striking and accuracy from dead-ball situations are key strengths. He admits he must to temper his aggression, after being shown red at the start of his tenures at each French club. “It's a trait I carry with me!” he jokes.
Monaco, Mentors and Future Ambitions
At Monaco, he cherishes the guidance of veterans such as Denis Zakaria and particularly Paul Pogba. “As soon as I heard Monaco were interested in Pogba, I told myself we are fortunate,” he said.
Currently, his focus is squarely on the Afcon tournament with Senegal. “We are the favourites – there's no denying it. If you beat England on their soil…,” he says, referencing a memorable 3-1 victory in Nottingham.
Regarding a future move to the Premier League, he remains focused on Monaco at present. “I feel really comfortable here,” he affirms. He is often teased by icon El-Hadji Diouf about Camara's two Africa Young Player of the Year awards. He laughs, but is serious about targeting the main top prize in the future.
“We are the favourites – we can’t hide from that. If you beat England at Wembley… it gives you belief.”
Looking ahead, this talented midfielder blends humble beginnings, unwavering focus, and grand ambitions as he aims to lead Senegal to Afcon success and build his own lasting legacy in the world of football.
