Larian Studios Explains Its Use of Generative AI for Upcoming Project
The studio behind acclaimed titles like Baldur's Gate 3 and Divinity: Original Sin recently unveiled its upcoming project, sparking immense anticipation within the player base. However, follow-up comments from the company's lead designer have introduced nuance to the conversation, addressing the team's approach toward generative artificial intelligence.
AI as a Creative Assistant, Not a Substitute
In a latest message, the studio's founder outlined that the company is utilizing generative AI for particular ancillary functions. These encompass fleshing out pitch decks, producing rough visual ideas, and writing placeholder dialogue.
Notably, Vincke made clear that the end material in the game will be crafted entirely by human writers. "Larian is writing every line ourselves," he stated.
Larian is continuously growing our pool of concept artists and are currently assembling writing teams.
As concept art is being explicitly referenced — we presently have twenty-three visual developers and have job openings for further artists.
All our efforts we do is additive and focused on letting our team spend additional energy on the creative process.
Every machine learning application used well is supplementary to a creative team process, not a replacement for their talent.
Addressing Concerns and Clarifying the Vision
The revelation of AI usage initially generated concern among a segment of the player base. In response, Vincke issued more elaboration on social media.
"We use AI tools to research ideas, in the same way we use Google and physical media," he stated. "In the very early planning process we use it as a simple sketch for layout which we then replace with hand-crafted artwork."
He added, "Larian brings on talent for their unique talent, not for their capacity to replicate what a machine suggests."
Focused Uses for Machine Learning
Vincke had earlier detailed the company's practical method to AI and ML, defining its use into key pillars:
- Handling Monotonous Jobs: This encompasses refining animations, dialogue cleanup, and technical processes like retargeting animations.
- Rapid Prototyping ('White Boxing'): Using technology to rapidly prototype basic versions of mechanics to experiment with concepts prior to full implementation.
- Long-Term Aspirations: Exploring how machine learning could in the future facilitate innovative reactivity, specifically in managing dynamic reactions in a complex RPG.
He clearly stated that core creative areas — such as writing — are are in no way areas where the company is cutting artistic involvement. In fact, Larian is recruiting more in these precise fields.
"Our studio is neither launching a game with AI-generated content, nor planning on trimming down staff to replace them with AI," Vincke concluded.
