Citizens have come together across the country to commemorate the second anniversary since the Hamas-initiated assault on 7 October 2023, as talks proceeded in Egypt over an end to the hostilities in Gaza.

The attack resulted in over 1,200 people dead and 251 others taken away to Gaza as hostages. It was the most deadliest day for Jews since the Holocaust.

Israel responded by initiating a defensive operation in Gaza which has taken over 67,000 people, as reported by the territory's Hamas-administered health ministry. Its statistics are regarded as trustworthy by the UN and other international bodies.

"The bloodthirsty opponents have caused great damage, but they have not overcome us," Benjamin Netanyahu remarked on that day.

He also promised to "realize all the goals of the war: the release of all the abducted, the removal of the Hamas regime and the guarantee that Gaza will no longer create a threat to Israel".

Remembrance Gatherings Across Israel

The national leadership postponed state memorials until 16 October - after the conclusion of the religious holiday season - but ceremonies still were held throughout the country on that day.

A memorial ceremony for the loved ones of Israeli citizens killed in the Hamas attack was held in the coastal city. Arranged by the families themselves, it was aired across Israeli TV networks.

Some time earlier, a moment of silence was held across the country.

Negotiation Meetings in Egypt

Meanwhile, the conflicting parties' negotiating teams convened in the North African tourist destination of Sharm el-Sheikh for a second day of indirect talks to review the provisions of the plan.

A high-ranking Palestinian official involved in the talks said that an evening round of indirect talks started at 19:00 Cairo time.

The official stated the day's discussions ended without tangible results, amid differences over the proposed Israeli pullout plans from Gaza and over safeguards Hamas wants to guarantee Israel does not recommence hostilities after the initial stage of the deal.

He added that the negotiations are "difficult and have still not produce any significant progress," but noted that mediators are making efforts to reduce the gaps between the conflicting groups.

Critical Matters in Talks

  • A lasting halt to fighting
  • The trade of the captives still kept by Hamas for detainees from Gaza
  • The removal of troops from Gaza
  • Measures for humanitarian aid provision
  • Future administration of the territory

Civilian Sentiment

In the city's memorial area that day, young Hagar - whose sibling endured the incident on the Nova music festival, where 378 people were lost their lives and many more were abducted by Hamas militants - shared: "No place seems like home anymore and until each abducted person return none of us will have peace of mind."

"Once we see everybody home once more, we can relax once more. Then we can begin to heal," she continued.

In front of the prime minister's home in Jerusalem, people assembled to show their backing for the loved ones of the captives. Israel states 48 remain in captivity in Gaza, approximately twenty of whom are considered to be living.

Activist Atalia Regev stated: "We must do whatever arrangement required for the captives to be released. But we truly desire promises that we will be safe."

Opinion polls now regularly indicate that approximately the majority of Israelis desire the hostilities to end in return for the freedom of the captives.

Palestinian Circumstances

At the location of the gathering, mourners assembled to pay their respects.

From the site, the boom of Israeli air strikes and artillery could be noticed just a few kilometres away in Gaza, where witnesses said the severe Israeli attacks carried on.

In the main city, air and artillery strikes were noted in the dawn of Tuesday in the western neighborhood, area and locality districts and in the eastern area of Sheikh Radwan, as well Shati refugee camp to the northwest.

"As the night falls, the fear arrives with it," relocated Gaza City resident Emaan al-Wahidi, whose teenage son was killed by an Israeli bombing earlier, explained.

"We are terrified of the attacks. Throughout the evening we are sleeping together, embracing, especially my youngest child who places his head on me all night."

"Continuously we check the reports to see developments. And I'm concerned that this ceasefire will not be achieved and that the war will return to us."

Health Situation

The medical facility in Gaza City said it had received the remains of several people by the afternoon, including a trio who lost their lives in an Israeli bombing in the southern al-Sabra neighbourhood.

A different healthcare center in the southern urban center of that area indicated additional victims had been transported. An individual was lost his life by Israeli troops while seeking aid to the south, medics said.

The region's health ministry reported twenty-five of the {territ
