Critical Role Campaign 4 Unveils the Soldiers Group
Ever since the premiere of Campaign 4, recently appointed game master Brennan Lee Mulligan has kept fans guessing with extensive world-building, a diverse cast of heroes, and a gripping narrative including angels, fiends, and malevolent powers increasing in influence within the city.
Note: Spoilers for the third episode of Campaign 4 are included.
The Combat-Oriented Party Revealed
The third episode ended with a dramatic pause and revealed the initial group of adventurers who will branch out from the main group to begin their independent quest, distinct from the remaining groups.
The Soldiers table includes Teor Pridesire (brought to life by Travis), the agile character (the talented performer), the strong-willed figure (the cast member), the cleric (Sam Riegel), and Kattigan Vale (Robbie).
Dividing the Cast
Given an extensive roster, it was evident from the start that having everyone at one table would be unfeasible.
Hence, the first four episodes of Campaign 4 serve as an Introduction, weaving together the characters’ stories before branching into three distinct groups: Fighters, Planners, and Seekers.
Characteristics of the Soldiers Table
Per the DM, the Soldiers table is for adventurers who prefer a classically intense battle-oriented narrative style where diplomatic options are scarce.
Upon first impression, figures such as the squeamish cleric Wicander Halovar might look mismatched, but the actions of the latest installment show why these particular heroes are perfectly fit for the Soldiers table.
Motivations for Departure
For one thing, the team knows exactly where to head next after a intense initial meeting with The Crow Keepers.
An old friend of Thjazi—whose passing kicked off the campaign’s events—used The Crow Keepers for his own means, breaking into Thjazi’s hideout, attacking the rogue, and swiping all the enchanted items to auction.
The antagonist then settled his obligations and escaped to a secure base in the northern region, above Dol-Makjar, with Cyd Pridesire pursuing him.
Individual Reasons
Moreover, each member has a individual motive to depart the urban setting:
- Thimble, as the companion and closest confidant, seeks retribution.
- Kattigan knows the northern area and warns that it is a dangerous place.
- Tyranny and Wicander, having defied his family’s wishes to eliminate Teor and instead rescued him, have nowhere else to go.
- Yet, their reputation as important members in the powerful family could assist the group access areas they usually can’t.
- Moreover, The fighter pledged a eternal obligation to The cleric for his deliverance and will now go with him everywhere.
Fugitives
Finally, all of them are sought by the powers that rule the setting for a multiple motives, making remaining behind too risky:
- Thimble and The hero are known criminals.
- Tyranny and Wicander defied House Halovar and the horde of evil beings they are allied with.
- The target is targeted for elimination by the clan.
This leaves them few options but to travel to the northern region in quest for the traitor.
Future Episodes
Based on the latest episode’s follow-up content, we find out that the Soldiers table will be absent next week, leaving the remaining eight players to form the Explorers and Planners tables.
Viewers can anticipate finding out which players will be in which group in Campaign 4’s concluding setup installment, streaming live on October 24.
