The Gunners' boss remains confident that his team can keep managing with fitness issues after revealing that forward Kai Havertz remains out for a few more weeks.

Prolonged Recovery for Havertz

The German forward has been sidelined for months following knee surgery. Initially expected to return sooner, Arteta explained the player encountered a problem when increasing his training and was unable to move forward “the next phase.”

“We learned, and we were able to put together a group that is far more dependable and has more options,” Arteta said.

Tactical Decisions for Brentford Clash

This update leaves a tactical puzzle for Wednesday’s home game against Brentford. Arteta must choose between continuing to use Mikel Merino, who scored playing out of position on Sunday, or bringing back Viktor Gyökeres, who came back from a muscle injury in the latter stages. Veteran striker Gabriel Jesus is also an option after 11 months out.

Defensive Concerns Persist

More doubts involve centre-back William Saliba and winger Leandro Trossard, who were absent for the Chelsea match. As a result, new recruits Cristhian Mosquera and Piero Hincapié are likely to continue in the backline for the league leaders.

The manager is convinced the substantial investment on squad depth ahead of this season has placed the club in a much stronger position to handle such unavailability.

Squad Depth Vital for Title Challenge

Questioned if a larger pool of players was benefiting their title quest, Arteta was emphatic. “Yes, since the current term has presented greater challenges in some areas, and now the problems with the defence,” he added.

“History has shown us that we must deploy players in different positions, and they need to be prepared to perform various functions if we aim to challenge at the top. And the example of Mikel is just the best one.”

Manager’s Sympathy for Frustrated Star

Commenting on the complication previously mentioned by national team coach Julian Nagelsmann, the manager gave more insight. “He was doing everything. He failed to advance to the next level and now it’s looking like we have overcome that hurdle.”

Arteta expressed his keenness to welcome him back. “Everyone is eager to have him. I mean, Havertz is someone that, personally, I value highly for what he brings to the team, but his mentality, his personality. I observe his frustration on the sidelines.”
